DESCRIPTION

Mikal is the only daughter of Staunton's sole hunter and trapper. The two of them are considered a bit 'odd' due to their preference for the choked, tangled forests rather than the tidy orderliness of a farm, but their efforts for the town are definitely appreciated. The village grandmothers cluck their tongues sadly about the girl, agreeing that she and her father really need a woman's guiding hand so Mikal doesn't end up a wild thing her whole life. Such a nice girl, too -- so sad she never had a mother!

Both father and daughter are very wilderness-savvy as well as keen monster hunters, the father favoring traps and the daughter relying more on her archery. Indeed, the walls of their small shack almost always have the pelts of their larger kills pegged out and drying, and there have been slow seasons where their harvest of largoss and asdrin kept the village's swine fed. Their hunting skills are excellent as well -- the father routinely trades fresh meat to the villagers for bread and any needed repairs, and the two are known for their generosity during poor harvest times.

"Brown hair zigzag around her face and a look of half-surprise,
Like a fox caught in the headlights, there was animal in her eyes.
Oh, she was a rare thing, fine as a bee's wing,
So fine a breath of wind might blow her away;
She was a lost child; oh, she was running wild-"

Mikal is a small, slight woman given to wearing loose, unremarkable clothing under a light leather vest, boots, and gloves. She's usually seen from a distance, and it'd be easy to mistake her for a boy but for the light pack and bow she usually wears -- those mark her clearly for who she is, since no one else tends to carry those tools. Her thick, curling brown hair is usually pulled back into a rather absently braided plait with disheveled wisps always coming loose from it, framing her face in a sort of ruffled, windswept mess. She has pale, sun-browned skin and storm-gray eyes, although if you asked any of the villagers for the color of her eyes they'd be hard-pressed to answer -- she's rarely seen in the town, and she tends to drift silently and shyly along the outskirts of any gathering, like a forgotten wisp of fog.

In the past month or so, however, Mikal has been almost astonishingly successful in her hunting. Most recently she was spotted dragging home (with great struggle on her part) the rather mangled body of a khidra! Considering father and daughter together have only brought down approximately five to seven khidra in their lives, this was pretty damn impressive hunting on her part. It was almost funny how shyly tongue-tied the extremely competent but exhausted young woman got when a couple of the huskier young men of the town ran out to aid her. Despite their sincere and well-meaning congratulations -- as well as their much-needed assistance -- Mikal ended up nearly fleeing back to the sanctuary of the woods soon thereafter.
